The same floor plan can cover very different roof areas

A house’s floor area does not tell you how much roofing it needs. Roofs extend over garages and porches, and the slopes add surface that a flat floor plan does not show.

The models beside this explanation show the difference. The calculator can use an actual roof-surface figure or convert a horizontal footprint with one pitch. It keeps that measurement choice visible so the example answers a useful budget question.

Explore an asphalt-roof planning example

Use a known roof measurement or keep the example to explore the relationship. You do not need to measure the roof yourself to request an inspection.

Keep the 2,000 sq. ft. example, or enter an area you already know. Roof footprint means the area covered, not total living space.

Keep the 6:12 example unless you already know the pitch. Pitch helps check material suitability.

Fayetteville asphalt planning rate: $5.57 per square foot.

Fayetteville, Arkansas planning figures, checked September 30, 2026.

Assumptions behind this planning benchmark

The September 2026 Fayetteville asphalt-shingle rate is $5.57 per square foot of roof surface. A 2,000-square-foot roof gives an $11,140 planning total.

Footprint mode uses pitch to calculate sloped area, with no steep-roof labor allowance. Removal and damaged-deck amounts are not established in the base rate. Budget separately for that work, flashing, access and material changes.

What this roof budget includes and leaves open

The result is a planning example using one published rate. The actual roof still determines what has to be removed, repaired and installed.

Roof cost calculator FAQs

Can I enter the square footage from my home listing?

That figure is usually living floor area, which can include more than one story and exclude a garage or covered porch. It is not a roof measurement. Keep the example if it is the only figure you have; an inspection can start without you measuring the roof.

Why does pitch not change the price in roof-surface mode?

The measured surface already includes the roof’s slope. Adding area for pitch again would count it twice. Pitch still affects material suitability and real installation work; this tool does not invent a separate steep-roof labor rate.

Why is the output one number rather than a price range?

The model uses one Fayetteville asphalt-shingle rate, $5.57 per square foot, so it returns a single planning total.

What comes after the planning example?
